Meta crowdsources the evidence that Muse pays for itself

Alexandr Wang's hashtag challenge produced dollar figures from Meta staff and outside founders, none of them with independent before-and-after numbers, and the top Muse plan costs $1,200 a year before any of it counts.

What happened

  • Meta chief AI officer Alexandr Wang asked on X whether Muse could "make you $1000", launching a hashtag challenge a few days after the agent went live on 8 September.
  • Business Insider reported that many of the posts answering the challenge came from Meta employees, sharing what they said Muse had saved them on phone bills, insurance and furniture returns.
  • The headline case came from startup founder Joseph Devoy, who said Muse found car insurance $3,500 a year cheaper than his existing plan and, per Axios, switched him over in about five minutes.
  • Muse sells at $20 and $100 a month alongside a free tier, below the $199.99 subscription floated before launch.
  • Amazon blocked Muse from placing orders on Monday, saying unauthorised agents break its conditions of use.

Why it matters

  • decision Keeping the top plan for a second year requires $1,200 of recovered money every year, and the most relatable wins in the thread are one-off refunds, so the renewal turns on savings nobody has shown repeating.
  • exposure With Stripe Link, PayPal and Shop Pay checkouts open to the agent, approving a total in the chat window is what stands between a user's payment details and a purchase they did not intend.
  • precedent Meta's own AI chief has set the proof standard for agentic savings at a self-reported dollar figure on X. Any rival agent can meet that on launch day.
  • contradiction Meta called the practical risk of the Muse Mac session flaw "quite low" and Patrick Wardle, who found it, disagreed. Anyone handing the agent a payment method gets two readings of the same bug.

One user said Muse got back the money on a book subscription his wife had forgotten to cancel a year earlier, and another said the agent turned up an unused $200 Verizon gift card [7][8]. Both are one-time recoveries. A year of the top plan costs $1,200 and a year of the cheaper one costs $240 [2][1], so the gift card covers two months at the higher price [5].

Wang pitched the target at $1,000. A year of the top plan costs $200 more than that [3].

Only one claim in the thread is built to arrive again. Devoy's insurance switch changes a bill that comes every year, and at his figure it is nearly three times the annual cost of the top plan [4]. Coinbase product manager Nick Prince wrote on X that Muse saved him $1,250 at a car dealership by steering him away from upsells and a large fee [9]. That is a one-time saving at one dealership. Axios also highlighted a user who said the agent caught a fraudulent recurring charge their bank had missed [10], and stopping a charge like that saves money every month after.

None of the savings in the thread, from staff or anyone else, come with independent before-and-after figures, TNW reported [4]. Neither Business Insider's Matthew Loh nor TNW put a number on how many replies came from Meta staff [3]. Wang runs the lab behind Muse Spark, the model Muse is built on, so the challenge also demonstrates his own team's work [12].

Muse became the most downloaded free iPhone app in the US within about ten days of launch, ahead of ChatGPT and Instagram, Axios reported, and Business Insider said it also reached the top of Google Play [14]. The rankings count downloads. Truist's Youssef Squali has a base case in which Muse adds $28.5bn a year to Meta's revenue by 2030 through subscriptions, commerce and developer access, TipRanks reported [13].

The merchant side moved in a day. PayPal said on X on Tuesday that its customers can shop and check out through Muse at PayPal merchants worldwide, Harshita Tyagi reported for Stocktwits [16], which adds to the Stripe Link checkout Muse shipped with, according to PYMNTS [17]. Shopify signed on the same day, with chief executive Tobi Lutke writing on X that Shop Pay checkout would work through Muse on all Shopify stores [18]. Shopify's shares rose about 7%, according to 24/7 Wall St [20], and Zuckerberg promised "more partnerships like this" in his own post on the deal [19].

Whether the saving arrives again next year without anyone touching it, and whether it is net of the subscription price, is what the person approving the renewal has to work out. A one-time $200 recovery against a $1,200 plan is a cost. The speaker matters here, because a dollar figure from someone whose employer ships the product is a testimonial. By that test the thread holds one claim with a number attached that would cover a second year at $100 a month, and it is the car insurance.

What to watch

  • Whether Meta publishes renewal or retention figures for the $20 and $100 Muse tiers, or savings measured against a baseline.
  • Whether Amazon's block on Muse orders holds, or Amazon strikes a checkout deal like PayPal and Shopify did.
  • Whether any independent check of a headline savings claim appears, including whether the cheaper insurance policy carried the same cover.
