Weekly meme coin volume on Robinhood's layer-2 rose to $3.5bn in late August, and the Solana base that figure is measured against sat near $42bn in both weeks, so the gain is share taken, not a market growing.

Divide $3.5bn by 8.3% and the implied Solana meme coin week is about $42.2bn; do the same on the earlier pair, $1.4bn over 3.3%, and you get about $42.4bn [1]. The denominator barely moved. The market Robinhood Chain gained share in was the same size in both weeks [4], and whether the new volume is flow diverted from somewhere else or activity that would not otherwise have happened is the one thing this data cannot tell you.
The 156% is rounded arithmetic on rounded inputs: 3.5 over 1.4 is 2.5, a 150% rise, so the published figure implies a base nearer $1.37bn [2]. More useful is what happened per wallet, because wallets did not quite double while volume more than did, taking average volume per meme coin wallet from roughly $3,474 to roughly $4,390, up about a quarter [3]. More traders, each trading more.
The fee snapshot is where the structure shows, or rather the comparison inside it is: Ponce, an app Robinhood neither built nor operates [5], collected about $5.95m of user fees in 24 hours [6] against roughly $4m for all of Robinhood Chain in the same window and about $2m for Hyperliquid [7], which puts one third-party app at about 1.49 times the fees of the chain underneath it [4]. Set that fee day against the volume week (the snapshot postdates it, so read this as a ceiling) and $5.95m on a $500m day is around 1.19% of notional [5]. Annualize the day and you get $2.2bn [7], a figure that means something only if the day repeats 365 times.
What none of it yields is Robinhood's revenue. Verma said the company takes a set percentage of on-chain transaction revenue and passes about half to Arbitrum [9], and since the percentage is undisclosed, $4m of daily chain fees converts into no dollar figure whatever for the equity holder [6].
The tidy read is that a chain pitched on tokenized real assets [12] got overrun by speculation, which is roughly what Four Pillars' "reverse growth formula" describes [11]. I think that is half right, and the other half is the load-bearing one: Ponce's distinguishing feature is that a newly minted token can be quoted against stablecoins or tokenized stocks rather than only ETH [8], which makes the brokerage's tokenized inventory the collateral of the speculation instead of its casualty. Tenev saying developers used the chain in ways the company had not thought of [10] is a chief executive describing distribution he already owned being monetized by somebody else [14].
It goes otherwise in at least three separable ways. Launch platforms have a half-life and the creator-fee loop needs fresh tokens to keep paying [13], so 8.3% reverts toward 3.3% and the fee line goes with it. Or Solana's flat base was a late-summer lull, in which case the share gain is measurement rather than displacement. Or the tokenized-stock quoting sticks and Robinhood ends up owning a quote asset franchise it did not price. The falsifier for my read is dated and cheap: if volume holds while tokenized-stock pairs stay a rounding error against ETH, then Robinhood is renting blockspace to a launchpad at an undisclosed rate, half of which goes to Arbitrum.
Ranked by verification strength, evidence, and original report placement.
Weekly meme coin trading volume on Robinhood Chain rose 156% to $3.5 billion in the period from the 25th to the 31st of August, from $1.4 billion between the 4th and the 10th, according to blockchain analytics firm Bitquery and other sources cited on the 5th.
Robinhood Chain is a layer-2 blockchain launched by U.S. online brokerage Robinhood on July 1, using layer-2 technology that addresses Ethereum's speed and cost limitations.
Wallets trading meme coins on Robinhood Chain increased 98% to 797,000 from 403,000 over the same comparison periods.
Robinhood Chain's volume as a share of Solana's, the network that has led the meme coin boom, climbed to 8.3% from 3.3% over the same periods.
Ponce, the token launch platform at the centre of the boom, is not operated by Robinhood but is an application built by an outside developer on Robinhood Chain; users create and trade a token by entering a name, ticker and image and paying a small amount of ether, with no coding required.
Users paid about $5.95 million in fees on Ponce over the previous 24 hours as of the 3rd, the fourth-highest among protocols tracked by DefiLlama, according to CoinDesk.

Evidence-backed comparisons of source perspectives and observed adoption signals. Read the methodology
Which Builder, Operator, and Investor concerns the observed source mix emphasized—not a truth score.
Evidence, demonstrated adoption, hype gap, incentives, and confidence are assessed independently, each on its own current evidence. How these are measured.
Named upstream sources, single relay
Every figure reaches the reader through one publisher: Bitquery for the volume and wallet series, DefiLlama by way of CoinDesk for the fee snapshot, Robinhood's own quarterly call for the revenue mechanics. The attributions are specific, which counts for something, but nothing has been measured twice. The internal arithmetic also wobbles: $1.4bn to $3.5bn is 150%, not the reported 156%, so the real starting base is nearer $1.37bn.
Real on-chain usage, two months deep
797,000 wallets and $3.5bn of weekly trading are measured quantities rather than projections, and $5.95m of fees in a day means people paid to be there. Set against that: two months of chain history, and a single launchpad generating most of the activity. Wallet counts also say nothing about how many distinct people sit behind them.
Share taken, described as a boom
"Explosion" and "growth engine" describe what the numbers show to be a share transfer. Solana's meme coin week works out at roughly $42bn on both sides of the comparison, so the climb from 3.3% to 8.3% moved volume from somewhere else rather than riding a rising market. The fee comparison anchoring the story is one 24-hour window, and annualising it to $2.2bn assumes a single day of meme coin trading repeats 365 times.
Growth narrated by its beneficiaries
The revenue mechanics come from Robinhood's CFO on an earnings call, the "developers surprised us" line from its CEO, and the interpretive frame from Four Pillars Research, a crypto research shop whose subject is the thing being praised. Ponce's own design pays token creators a cut of every trade, which means part of the volume being cited as demand is volume somebody is paid to produce.
Direction solid, precision unchecked
Something real did happen on this chain in August, and an application out-earning the chain it runs on is exactly the kind of inversion DefiLlama would surface. The precise figures hold up less well: a percentage change that contradicts its own endpoints, and a fee day sampled three days after the volume week it is placed beside. Add an undisclosed revenue rate and the story's central financial question stays open.
