Koo takes five LG executives to Redmond to pitch Microsoft cooling and prefab data centers
Koo Kwang-mo and Satya Nadella agreed to explore LG supplying cooling, power and IT infrastructure to Microsoft's AI data centers, and LG plans to put Microsoft's Copilot in front of its office workers worldwide.

What happened
- LG said Chairman Koo Kwang-mo and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella met at Microsoft's Redmond headquarters on the 21st and agreed to expand their strategic partnership.
- Medium to long term, the plan extends to prefab data centers, in which major equipment and structures are made in factories in advance and assembled quickly on site.
- The delegation included the COO of LG Corp. and the chief executives of LG Electronics, LG Uplus and LG CNS, plus the president of LG Science Park.

Why it matters
- constraint With no volume or price fixed, LG Electronics and LG CNS still have to win each Microsoft site on bid terms, and Microsoft keeps the option to buy its cooling from anyone else.
- exposure LG is the side with spending it has already described: Copilot for office staff worldwide and training runs on Microsoft's cloud, both billable before a single chiller ships.
- capability Prefab would let LG sell equipment and structure together on one order. Its appliance and IT units cannot currently book that work as a single sale.
- decision By sending its AI and data center leadership as one delegation, LG is organising group B2B growth around a single customer's construction calendar.
LG and Microsoft agreed to jointly explore business opportunities. That is not an order. The account of the Redmond meeting keeps LG's data center business in the conditional. The two sides will work out "the possibility of supplying large-scale cooling solutions" for Microsoft's key strategic data centers, and will jointly explore opportunities for LG to supply cooling, power and IT infrastructure as Microsoft expands [5][4]. LG did not disclose an order value, a volume or a named site [18].
LG plans to adopt Microsoft's AI and cloud platforms, Copilot included, for office workers worldwide [9], and to train on Microsoft's high-performance cloud using data accumulated on its factory floors, then apply the models back to production [10]. Those are the pieces described as deployments, and both point spending from LG toward Microsoft. The chillers are the half still described as a possibility, and they would point spending the other way [19].
Who travelled says what the package is meant to contain. LG Corp COO Kwon Bong-seok, LG Electronics CEO Ryu Jae-cheol, LG Uplus CEO Hong Beom-shik, LG CNS CEO Hyun Shin-kyoon and LG Science Park President Jung Soo-heon were all in the room [7], six senior people including the chairman, drawn from five entities [17]. Seoul Economic Daily reported that the visit is seen as a move to expand AI business with Microsoft through a "One LG" approach that bundles affiliates' capabilities [8]. The sellable pair inside that bundle is LG Electronics' heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology alongside LG CNS' data center building and operating work [12].
Major equipment and structures produced in factories in advance and assembled quickly on site [6] puts the cooling plant and the shell it sits in on the same order. That is a different business from shipping a chiller to a site another contractor assembles, and it changes what LG would be selling.
Talks gained momentum at a technology event at Microsoft's headquarters in December last year, and working-level and management discussions ran for several months before Koo and Nadella widened the scope to AI infrastructure, workplace innovation and physical AI [14]. That is roughly nine months between the event and the meeting on the 21st [16].
LG gets qualified on named Microsoft sites and later wins prefab work. That would be lumpy hardware and construction revenue. Or the framework stays a framework, and LG's affiliates bid for work they would have bid for anyway. Or the durable gain sits with Microsoft: one agreement hands it a Korean industrial supplier option and a group-wide Copilot rollout. In my view the middle case is the likeliest, and the argument against it is in the timeline: nine months of working-level and management discussion before the chairman flew is longer than an announcement needs, and it is the pattern of engineering qualification. If the cooling supply is already specified at particular sites, the exploratory wording is just the public step and the middle case is wrong. LG's stated strategy is to bundle home appliances, air conditioning, IT services and telecommunications around AI and grow its business-to-business sales [15].
What to watch
- A named Microsoft data center with LG cooling installed, and a disclosed contract value or volume behind it.
- A first prefab data center order with delivery dates. That would move LG CNS and LG Electronics onto the same purchase order.
- The scale and pricing of LG's Copilot rollout to office workers worldwide, the one side of the alliance that bills immediately.
