Tesla's Cybercab leaves its rider standing in a narrow Austin road

An hour of paid rides in the wheel-free two-seater shows software that drives passably and a service that fumbles the last fifty feet, where a human driver used to quietly handle the stopping and the door.

Why it matters

  • cost At more than $7.50 a mile before the wait, the rider is funding a density problem rather than buying a faster trip, and the fare cannot come down until there are far more cars in the geofence.

The awkward part of that stop is the part a human driver never itemizes. Someone at the wheel outside a crowded swimming hole reads the cars stacking up behind, rolls forward twenty feet, and opens the door where it will not swing into traffic. The Cybercab has neither steering wheel nor pedals [10], so nobody inside it can make that call, and the rider absorbs the stares instead.

The doors have the same shape of problem. Opening them from a button in the Robotaxi app is a genuine improvement over wrestling with a Model Y handle [7], and it also moves the timing decision away from the person standing next to the door, to software that cannot see them flinch. The Verge reports a handful of passengers saying the butterfly doors opened fast enough to strike them, though its own reporter never had it happen [8].

Supply is why the waiting is long. The Texas DMV counts 45 Cybercabs registered statewide [3] against an Austin service area of about 288 square miles [2]. Assume generously that every registered car is working the geofence: 288 divided by 45 is one vehicle per 6.4 square miles [2]. Fleet size is the tractable item here. It is also the only one a purchase order fixes.

Earlier Cybercab testing around Austin ran with a human safety driver and a retrofitted wheel and pedals [13]. Taking those out removes the fallback for the hesitation The Verge describes [11] and for the curb decision in the same stroke. The Verge's own read is that the door and drop-off problems cloud an otherwise impressive ride [15], and the driving it describes is competent rather than confident [12].

For Tesla in Austin, the steps that still need a human touch are where the car stops and when the door opens. Those are the steps a demo never shows and a rider notices immediately.

If the drop-off logic is not ready, the honest configuration is fixed pickup and set-down points, which reads as a downgrade from door-to-door service and will make the pilot's numbers look worse than a wheel-free lounge deserves. The alternative is billing bystanders for a step that no longer has an owner.

What to watch

  • Whether Tesla adds fixed pickup and set-down points, or gives riders an in-app control to reposition a stopped Cybercab.
  • Whether the Texas DMV registration count climbs well past 45 and quoted wait times come down with it.
  • Whether the reports of butterfly doors striking passengers turn into a door-speed software change or a recall.
