Intel Slim, the build ZDNet reached for first, says exactly what it covers: 6th to 9th generation Intel Celeron and Pentium processors sold between 2015 and 2019, with Intel HD or UHD graphics [6]. The test laptop was a 2019 machine with a 10th-generation Core i3 [4], which misses that description twice, once on generation and once on product line [16]. The note was correct. Acting on it required knowing two facts about a machine that the person holding the machine usually cannot recite, which is ZDNet's own complaint about the download page [9].
That asymmetry cuts the other way for anyone running more than one computer. A team with asset records already holds the processor field the picker is asking about; the download-and-retry loop ZDNet describes is what happens when the only inventory is the sticker on the palm rest. And a wrong pick is not merely a wasted USB write: the wrong build can leave display, network, keyboard, sound or trackpad dead [7]. Those are per-model failures rather than per-machine ones, so the sane unit of work is one validated image per laptop SKU, proven on a sacrificial unit, then applied.
The write step has its own trap. The download arrives as a .zip and must go to Balena Etcher still compressed; unpack it first and the resulting USB drive will not boot [10].
The deltas that matter to a support desk are quieter than the boot time. The browser is Chromium, not Chrome [12]. Sign-in is a Google account, and it pulls back the app list from whatever ChromeOS instance the user had before [11], which is pleasant for the user and a surprise for whoever thought they owned the software on that device. Several bundled FydeOS apps need a separate Fyde account, and the Notes app will either keep notes locally or sync them to a FydeOS cloud account [13]. That is a second identity to provision and a second destination for company text, sitting alongside the Google one.
What the OS is offering in exchange is the ordinary Chromebook envelope: web, Android and Linux apps, background updates, and a read-only system the vendor markets as virus armour [3]. On hardware that Windows 11 will not have, that is enough to keep a machine on the estate for another cycle rather than in a disposal bin [4].
The bill, then, is labour, not licences, because the software is free [1]. Labour is front-loaded into validation, and it is a number each site has to produce itself: hours to prove one image against one model, plus whatever the residual defects cost forever. A refresh quote is a single figure someone else calculates for you. This is the other side of that comparison, and until the per-model validation is done, nobody actually knows which one is cheaper.

ZDNet started with the Intel Slim build and got a black screen, then used Intel Modern, which booted fine but did not recognise the trackpad; the workaround was plugging in a USB wireless mouse.

First-hand but single-device testing
The strongest material is direct and specific: named builds, quoted compatibility text, exact failure modes, the flashing pitfall, and the AI keyboard shortcuts - all observed by the author on one machine. That is real primary evidence for the install experience. It is weakened by having one tester, one laptop and no independent replication, and by vendor feature claims (8-second boot, 'virus armour') that were repeated rather than measured, with the promised Android app support failing to appear.
No adoption signal beyond one reviewer install
The cluster contains a single journalist install and no download counts, user or install-base figures, deployment disclosures, vendor traction data or third-party usage reports. One hands-on test is not a measure of uptake, so adoption cannot be scored from the supplied material.
Vendor promises outrun the verified test
The headline promise - free, ChromeOS-like, revives dead-end laptops - was broadly borne out on the test machine, so the gap is moderate rather than large. But the vendor's promoted feature set overstates what was verified: 'seamless' Android app support was absent (F-Droid listed zero apps, a sideloaded APK was unsupported), the 8-second boot and 'virus armour' hardening went unmeasured, and 'free' is qualified by an unpriced AI free trial and account-gated apps. The install itself required two builds and a USB mouse, which is friction the marketing framing does not convey.
Free-tier funnel plus review-genre pull, no disclosed payment
Two mild, visible incentive pressures. On the vendor side, the OS is free while value sits behind a Fyde account, cloud note sync and an AI assistant labelled a free trial with no published pricing and a help chat that would only say 'free right now' - a structure that rewards adoption before terms are settled. On the publisher side this is evergreen 'revive your old PC' service journalism whose value depends on an upbeat verdict; the article does still surface the missing Android support, failed build and trackpad problem, and no vendor relationship or sponsorship is disclosed, so distortion looks moderate rather than heavy.
Credible but unreplicated single source
Confidence is limited by structure, not plausibility: one publisher, one tester, one device, and no second account to check the build-selection failures, the smooth performance claim or the AI trial terms. Within those limits the reporting is specific, self-critical about what did not work, and internally consistent, which supports moderate confidence in the install-experience claims and low confidence in the vendor feature claims.
