CXMT moved LPDDR5X from mass production to a flagship handset in about 13 months

ChangXin Memory has announced 24-Gbit LPDDR5X products. Its own timeline runs from LPDDR5X mass production in May 2025 to LPDDR6 mass production by September 2026, on a target of about 300,000 wafers a month.

Why it matters

A 24GB package is 192 gigabits, and the dies CXMT lists for this line are 12Gb and 16Gb [2], so the largest capacity is a stack of twelve or sixteen of them [1]. The announcement's 24 is a gigabyte package figure. The densest LPDDR5X die in the report is 16Gb, and the 24Gb density belongs to the DDR5 parts CXMT showed at the International IC China expo in November 2025 at speeds up to 8,000 Mbps [2][5].

Thirteen months separate the start of LPDDR5X mass production from the memory appearing in a shipping flagship [3], and sixteen separate it from LPDDR6 mass production [4]. In between, the speed grade went from 8,533 Mbps in volume to customer samples at 10,667 Mbps five months later, a 25% step [2]. Against the previous generation, CXMT puts bandwidth up 66% and power down roughly 30% [12].

What a phone socket proves is qualification. Pricing power is a separate question. Cryptobriefing did not report shipment volumes, contract prices, or CXMT's share of bits against Samsung, SK hynix and Micron, which it describes as collectively controlling the vast majority of DRAM production [9][14]. The 300,000 wafers a month works out to 3.6 million wafers a year if the rate is held for twelve months [5], and the figure describes capacity at the end of 2026.

Two readings fit that record. In the first, a qualified domestic part at 8,533 and 9,600 Mbps with that much capacity behind it becomes the marginal supplier for Chinese handset bills of materials, and the marginal supplier sets the low end of the price. In the second, the Nubia and Xiaomi sockets are supply-security decisions by domestic buyers, and the volumes never reach an international contract negotiation.

I lean to the first, on one condition. A supplier sampling 10,667 Mbps a year before it ships and mass-producing LPDDR6 by September 2026 [4][7] is on the standard premium handsets are adopting now. A second source on the current standard is what moves a negotiated price. A supplier a generation behind mostly clears inventory. A bit-share figure would settle it, or an incumbent naming Chinese mobile supply when it explains its own pricing.

Cryptobriefing also reports that CXMT is exploring NAND flash and has plans for an eventual IPO [10][11]. A prospectus would put volumes and per-bit pricing in front of the three companies it sells against.

What to watch

  • Whether the 300,000 wafers a month target is actually met at the end of 2026, and how that capacity splits between LPDDR5X and LPDDR6.
  • Any Samsung, SK hynix or Micron pricing commentary that names Chinese mobile DRAM supply as a factor.
  • An IPO filing from CXMT, which would put shipment volumes and per-bit pricing on the public record.
