Doubling a 60/40 with a 10% bitcoin sleeve took eleven times the portfolio's own return
Asset managers are pitching bitcoin as the fix for a bond sleeve that has lost purchasing power for a decade. The weights they recommend, 2% to 10%, cover a quarter of a 60/40's 40 points of bonds at most.

Why it matters

River's doubling result describes bitcoin's decade before it describes anything about weighting. Take the plain 60/40 as ending at a multiple m of what went in. Put 90 percent of the money in that same mix, assume it earned what the mix earned, and put 10 percent in bitcoin: River's finding says 0.9m plus a tenth of bitcoin's multiple equals 2m, which leaves bitcoin at eleven times the 60/40's own multiple [12]. Any asset that returned eleven times the blend would have doubled the portfolio from a 10 percent slot.
The sizes on the table are smaller than the swap language suggests. Hougan's range is 2 to 10 percent [4], and a standard 60/40 carries 40 points in bonds [6]. At the top of his range, 30 points of the portfolio still need a home; at the bottom, 38 [13]. Those points go to cash, to short duration, to more equity, or back into the Treasuries the pitch was meant to replace.
The complaint against Treasuries in the piece is a return complaint measured over ten years [3]. The 40 points are held for what they do while equities fall. Cryptobriefing concedes as much in its closing caveat: a 30 percent drawdown in the allocation you called safe is a different experience from a slow grind of negative real returns [10]. The article reports that BlackRock has highlighted bitcoin's low correlation with traditional asset classes at a time when stocks and bonds increasingly move together [7], and does not include a correlation figure [14].
Anthony Pompliano's version pairs the two exposures, growth from AI equities and inflation hedging from bitcoin [9]. The supply argument sits underneath it: 21 million coins [8] against a federal debt above $40 trillion that can always be added to [2].
A drawdown is what would settle this. Mega-cap AI infrastructure names are an outsized share of the major indices, so a passive holder owns that concentration without having chosen it [11]. Say those names fall 25 percent. If bitcoin falls with them, a 10 percent sleeve made the portfolio worse in the quarter it was supposed to help. If bitcoin holds, the low-correlation claim holds where it counts. In my view the 2 percent end of Hougan's range is the defensible one, and the duration decision on the remaining 38 points stays open. The evidence offered against bonds is about realized return, and the sleeve is bought for behaviour under stress. The counter-argument is a good one. A decade of negative real returns on long Treasuries is one of the worst stretches in 223 years of data [3], and a 2 point position can lose at most 2 points while insuring against the next ten years resembling the last.
Hougan's framing is the part that will travel fastest. He argues that a 0 percent bitcoin allocation now amounts to a misallocation and not a conservative choice [5]. Inside an investment committee, that puts the burden of proof on whoever wants to hold none.
What to watch
- The first 20%-plus drawdown in AI mega-caps, and whether bitcoin falls alongside it, tests the low-correlation claim BlackRock's research rests on.
- Whether Bitwise or River publish drawdown-period correlation numbers alongside ending-value multiples.
