Belgium's largest wildfire in modern records reached 3,000 hectares in the High Fens nature reserve two days after breaking out, and by Sunday it was being worked by several hundred firefighters and emergency personnel, six aircraft and a line of farm tractors towing water tankers filled from a nearby lake [1][2][4][9][14]. Four of those six aircraft belonged to other countries [14][21], which is the operationally interesting fact: a fire in temperate northwest Europe escalated past what the host country had in the air.
