The useful result is a split between two outcome measures. Both visual formats made airborne virus transmission substantially easier to understand than plain text [5], but only animation is reported to have significantly raised willingness to put preventive measures in place [6]. Comprehension and motivation came apart. A programme graded on whether readers learned the material would have scored comics and animation about the same and bought the cheaper one [14].
Professor Paichi Pat Shein, a corresponding author, attributes animation's edge to emotional engagement built through narrative and character-driven storytelling, which she says strengthens risk perception and empathy [8]. That is the authors' mechanism, and the account of the study does not report whether time on task was held constant across the three formats [17]. Animation runs at a fixed pace and takes as long as it takes; text and comics let the reader skim. Dose is a plausible competitor to empathy, and nothing in the reported design rules it out.
The sample is worth reading closely. It covered 3,217 people in Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, and it was drawn from health care professionals, educators and university students [3]. That is an audience with above-average exposure to health information before the experiment started, which makes the animation increment a finding about people who already read this material for work or study, not about a general public [16]. The report also flags a stronger effect among female participants, with an explanation offered after the fact about greater concern for public health and the well-being of others [7].
The other thing missing from the account is price. No effect sizes are given [15], so the ranking is directional rather than something you can put next to a per-person cost. Animation is the format whose production and localisation cost scales worst, and "The Quest of the Virosols" already exists in 20 languages [11], which means the calculation for an agency reusing it differs from the calculation for one commissioning a new series. The study makes the case for the medium; it does not make the case for your budget line.
Held to what it measured, the study licenses a claim about stated intention and no more [13]. Professor Chia C. Wang argues that science communication should be treated as an essential component of public health preparedness [10], on the reasoning that evidence alone did not change behaviour during COVID-19 [9]. That is a defensible position, and this evidence supports the weaker half of it: animation moves what people say they will do. Whether it moves masks worn or ventilation installed remains an open question that a willingness questionnaire cannot answer.

Comics are shown to match animation on understanding, yet the headline framing collapses this into animation superiority.
