Anthropic pledges more than $100bn to AWS for $5bn of Amazon cash now
The new money is $5 billion today and up to $20 billion tied to commercial milestones Amazon did not define, against a ten-year Anthropic commitment to spend more than $100 billion on AWS silicon.

What happened
- Amazon is investing $5 billion in Anthropic now and up to $20 billion later, tied to certain commercial milestones, on top of the $8 billion it has already put in.
- Anthropic has committed to spend more than $100 billion over ten years on AWS technologies, covering Trainium silicon and tens of millions of Graviton CPU cores.
- Amazon says Bedrock already runs most of its inference on Trainium, and that Trainium and Graviton each have more than 100,000 customers.

Why it matters
- constraint A decade of Anthropic's training capacity is now sourced from one vendor's chip line, so future Trainium price-performance is something Anthropic negotiates with its own shareholder.
- capability Amazon can now sell Trainium to other buyers against a frontier lab's ten-year purchase horizon, which is a stronger reference than a benchmark sheet.
- decision A buyer weighing Claude can put it on an AWS agreement already signed, so the question for procurement becomes cloud budget rather than a new vendor relationship.
- exposure Up to $25 billion of new Amazon equity sits in a company whose largest cost line is Amazon revenue, so a writedown and a revenue miss would show up in the same quarter.
Twenty-five billion dollars of new Amazon equity comes against a commitment to spend more than $100 billion, which is four dollars of promised AWS revenue for each dollar going in [1][3][3]. Count the $8 billion Amazon has already put into Anthropic and the cumulative equity reaches up to $33 billion, about a third of the spend [2][1][4]. Spread over ten years, the spend side averages roughly $10 billion a year [3][2].
Amazon described the further $20 billion as tied to certain commercial milestones and did not define them [1]. The $5 billion going in today is the one figure in the announcement with no ceiling and no condition on it [1].
The capacity half runs across Trainium2, Trainium3, Trainium4 and an option on later generations, up to 5 gigawatts, with significant Trainium3 capacity expected online this year [4][5]. Amazon says Bedrock already runs most of its inference on Trainium [6], and Anthropic works with Annapurna Labs on future Trainium chips, feeding back from Claude training workloads [7]. "Our custom AI silicon offers high performance at significantly lower cost for customers, which is why it's in such hot demand," said Andy Jassy, Amazon's chief executive [8]. Tens of millions of Graviton cores are in the commitment too [3].
For Anthropic, that fixes where a decade of training capacity comes from and where its chip-level optimisation effort goes [7].
The distribution piece is smaller and arrives sooner. AWS customers will reach the Anthropic-native Claude console from inside their existing AWS account, with no additional credentials, contracts or billing relationships to manage, under the access controls they already operate [9]. More than 100,000 customers run Claude models on AWS today [10], and the deal adds an expansion of international inference in Asia and Europe [12]. "Our users tell us Claude is increasingly essential to how they work, and we need to build the infrastructure to keep pace with rapidly growing demand," said Dario Amodei, Anthropic's chief executive and co-founder [11].
The soft part is the $100 billion. A ten-year spend figure from a company growing at Anthropic's rate is a forecast as much as a floor, and "up to 5 gigawatts" is a ceiling with one year of Trainium3 named against it [3][4]. The $20 billion stays on Amazon's balance sheet if the milestones go unmet [1].
I would price the firm part at $5 billion of cash plus this year's Trainium3 tranche, and treat the other $20 billion and the other four gigawatts as options Amazon holds. Two things would make that reading wrong: a take-or-pay or minimum-purchase term surfacing in Anthropic's disclosures, or the first gigawatt of Trainium3 landing on the schedule Amazon has given [4].
What to watch
- Whether the first gigawatt of Trainium3 capacity for Anthropic comes online this year as Amazon has said.
- Any take-or-pay, minimum-purchase or termination language attached to the $100bn commitment appearing in Anthropic disclosures.
- Whether Amazon discloses the commercial milestones gating the $20bn, or the valuation at which the $5bn goes in.
