Split the panel down the middle and each half is 2560 pixels wide by 2160 tall [1]. That is two 1440p-width windows side by side, each of them taller than a 1440p monitor. It is also why the vertical number matters more than the diagonal: 2160 lines is the same vertical resolution as a 4K widescreen, which a 3440x1440 ultrawide cannot match [12].
The density claim survives a check. 5120 by 2160 across a 39-inch diagonal comes to about 142 pixels per inch [2]. A 34-inch panel at 3440x1440 comes to about 110 [3], and 142 over 110 is 1.30 [4], which is where Wired's roughly 30 percent figure comes from [3]. The arithmetic only lands there if the baseline is a 34-inch 3440x1440 screen, which is the comparison the review is making [9]. Run the same sum on the 39-inch OLEDs already selling at 3440x1440 and you get about 96 PPI [5], less dense than the 34-inch a buyer would be replacing. That is what "bigger ultrawide" has meant on shelves until now [11].
Then there is 165Hz [4]. The qualifier "at native resolution" is doing real work in that spec, and the review does not say what the panel manages below native [4]. For anyone deciding on Monday, the useful test is not the ceiling but whether their own frame counter clears 165 at 5120x2160 in the games they actually load, because that is the number the monitor will cap.
On brightness, the 1,011 nits Wired recorded works out to 78 percent of the quoted HDR peak, 289 nits short [7], while the 300-nit SDR figure held up in testing [7]. The reviewer still places 1,011 at the upper end of what good OLED monitors deliver [8]. Fine in a dark room, wrong on the spec line you paste into a purchase justification.
The other rollout detail is physical. Wired says the included stand allows too much wobble [15], and whatever you do about 39 inches of panel on a wobbly stand is not included in the $1,100.
Who this is for: the person who spends four weekdays in tiled windows and a video timeline and two evenings in a game. The 99 percent DCI-P3 coverage and accuracy the review measured mean the work half of that is genuine, not a marketing checkbox [14], and USB-C connectivity means the laptop side of the desk plugs in [16].
Two axes to settle it. First, whether anything you open needs 2160 vertical lines: 4K footage at full resolution, long documents, two full-height windows. Second, whether your GPU clears 165 fps at 5120x2160 in the titles you play.

Every number that carries this story — 1,011 nits, 300 nits SDR, a zero-nit floor, 99 percent DCI-P3 — was taken on one reviewer's bench at Wired, and no other outlet in our coverage has metered this panel. The readings are specific and one of them contradicts the spec sheet, which is not what vendor-fed copy looks like. The softer parts are the market assertions: that only two ultrawides carry this LG panel, and the sharpness edge, which we can check with arithmetic but not with a second lab.
On sale, uncounted
What we can see is availability: the Alienware is buyable at about $1,100, and the LG panel underneath it is shipping in precisely two ultrawides. That is the entire market as described. Nobody supplies unit volumes, channel data, review-unit counts or any sign of how the 39-inch 5K2K format is selling, so this scores as a real product with no demand signal attached.
Spec sheet ahead of the meter
The overstatement belongs to Alienware, not Wired: 1,300 nits quoted, 1,011 delivered, a 289-nit gap the review prints instead of smoothing over. What tilts this slightly positive is the framing around it — "gaming glory", the sweet-spot thesis, "the first to do it the right way" — sitting on top of a monitor whose refresh rate stops at 165 Hz natively, a limit the same review lists as a drawback. The $700 undercut against the GX9 is the one big claim that needs no benefit of the doubt; it is arithmetic on two published prices.
Buying-guide format, audible dissent
This is Wired in purchase-recommendation mode — WIRED/TIRED bullets, a price comparison against the nearest rival, a verdict pointed at gamers deciding tonight. That shape rewards a clean yes. Cutting the other way, the reviewer declines to confirm the brightness spec, calls the company's design language too basic and demure, and nitpicks the stand, none of which a captured writeup would keep. Absent from the page: whether the unit was loaned by Alienware and how the review relates to commerce links, so we cannot close the loop.
Credible single witness
A hands-on review with numbers is worth more than a spec regurgitation, and the arithmetic in this story holds — the density ratio Wired asserts is exactly what the resolutions and diagonals produce. But it is one publisher, one unit, one afternoon of readings, and the claims most likely to age badly (the two-monitor panel exclusivity, the current GX9 street price) are the ones nobody can re-check from here.
