Perplexity at ~40x: the multiple halved while the valuation rose 50%
Nvidia's reported talks value Perplexity above $30 billion on more than $750 million of annualized revenue, roughly 40 times. A year ago the same company carried about twice that multiple.

Why it matters
Multiple compression normally arrives with a lower price attached. This one arrives with a raise. The Information's $20 billion mark from last September sat against annualized revenue that was still under $250 million at the start of this year, better than 80 times [3][2]. Above $30 billion on more than $750 million is about half that [7]. Revenue moved faster than the valuation, so the multiple fell while the headline number went up.
That makes the incumbent comparison awkward rather than flattering. Perplexity's top line grew more than 200% over the stretch [19]. Salesforce's Agentforce ARR grew 205% year over year [9]. Same order of growth, opposite treatment, and the difference is the denominator: $1.2 billion of Agentforce ARR is roughly 2.6% of the $46.05 billion midpoint Salesforce guides to for the full year [10][8]. Guggenheim's John Difucci stated the investor problem without decoration: "It's easy to say that AI annual recurring [revenue] grew to over $1 billion, but it remains difficult to see it anywhere in the numbers" [13].
The selling also looks company-specific rather than sectoral. At the time of the earnings report Salesforce was down about 33% for the year against roughly 12% for the iShares Expanded Tech-Software ETF [15], and what set it off was arithmetic in the second decimal place: a full-year midpoint of $46.05 billion against the $46.12 billion analysts had penciled in, and a second-quarter range topping out just under the $11.36 billion consensus [20]. An 11% grower can miss by a whisker. A company tripling cannot be read that finely, and precision-free growth is what 40x is buying.
The base underneath it is thin. Perplexity attributes part of the increase to Perplexity Computer, a cloud-based agent professionals use to automate computer tasks [18], and the whole figure is one annualized snapshot in a single report [1].
