The mechanic worth paying for is what happens when the issuer pays out. Bankless reports that dividends are handled at the token level, so a position does not break while the token is sitting in DeFi as collateral [8]. That is what separates a pledgeable equity token from a merely tradable one: it can be posted on Aave or added to liquidity pools without an unwind at every distribution [9]. Most competing tokenized equities, per Bankless, are synthetic trackers rather than 1:1 backed claims [6], and that distinction stays academic right up to the moment someone has to model recovery on a defaulted loan secured by one.
Now size the prize. Ondo holds roughly $1B of an approximately $3B tokenized equities market [12], close to a third of it [13], leaving something like $2B spread across Kraken's xStocks, Binance's bStocks and everyone else [14]. Coinbase begins at nothing. Jesse Pollak says thousands of names are targeted over time with more launches within days [3], and Base says further Coinbase-issued stocks and other real world assets arrive in the coming weeks [20]. To draw level with Ondo, that pipeline has to produce about $1B of tokenized shares outstanding [14].
Access constrains how fast that can happen. The product is live for eligible users outside the United States [2], with restrictions on US users applied at the app layer rather than across Base [10]. Early volume therefore has to come from non-US flow and from lending and yield loops inside Base itself, not from the retail base Coinbase already has onshore.
The delivery record is the part to weigh against the Navy metaphor. Coinbase set out the 1:1 design with automatic dividends in June, and non-US users were expected to have it in July [15]; it landed later than that [16], after Robinhood put tokenized stocks among the first offerings on its own layer-2 last month [17]. Pollak's framing is that Coinbase moves slowly and then arrives in force with the most trusted version [18]. Bankless, which calls Base late to this market, sets the test as whether Aerodrome and Aave can peel serious volume away from Ondo and Kraken [19]. Until that shows up, the honest read is a better-built claim with no share of the pool, and share is the thing that gets priced.
