Rissho experiments find personal history outweighs reputation when people judge refusals to help

Rissho University researchers report, from two scenario experiments in Japan, that people judge a refusal to help by how the refused person once treated them. Theories of cooperation built on shared reputation now have to account for a private signal that counted only when someone said no.
